How do you grow a salt crystal without using hot water?

How do you grow a crystal seed? How long does it take to evaporate and turn into a seed? Can I not use boiling water as my solution? How long will the crystals take to form?

1. you can leave it in a warm environment so the water can evaporate which would probably take a day to finish, but the time depends on the temperature and surface area etc.
